Intro Tania Rose Josun shares how each issue of Kairos Global comes to be. 

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself as the editor of a magazine, and a Catholic magazine at that! For starters, I am not ‘qualified’ for it; my educational background and earlier work experience are in a totally different field. And yet, God in His mercy brought me here. And I am forever grateful.

It was a love for reading – a love that, by God’s grace, continues to shepherd me – that got me a job as an assistant editor in a children’s imprint. Unfortunately, my stint there was short when a fall left me bedridden for a year. And just before I could slip into despair, an angel appeared. Suby Emmanuel – Suby Chechi, a friend of ours asked if I could help out with a story for a cartoon. She was coordinating the pilot issue of Kairos Buds, a soon-to-be Catholic magazine for children. The rest was, every bit of it, God’s amazing providence. 

Now, with the hundredth issue of Kairos Global, I have been tasked with telling the story of how the magazine comes to print. 

The Team

Every issue of Kairos Global begins as a discussion in the editorial team. At present, the team comprises eight members – Fr Alvin Mundackal, Dcn Anthony Kunnumpurath, George Paul, Jyothsna DSouza, Aleena Joy, Kairos Media Director Dr Chackochan Njavallil, Kairos Global Editor-in-Chief Sijo Thomas, and myself. 

Fr Alvin is completing a course in media, and being among college students, is a font of youth-relevant topics. In each discussion, he brings the realities young people today undergo. Dcn Anthony Kunnumpurath is a physician by profession, who is currently studying for the priesthood. He is based in the USA, and is extremely helpful in bringing new authors to Kairos. George Paul is a design professional. He elevates our editorial discussions with his deep insights and profound thinking. Jyothsna DSouza is a Chartered Accountant who at present indulges her creative side. Author of two faith-based children’s books, she also prepares fun faith games. Aleena Joy is an engineer by profession and is currently a stay-at-home-mom. A member of the Syro-Malabar theology forum, she is passionate about pro-life causes. 

The Meeting

A couple of months before the issue in question, the team gathers online on a pre-arranged evening, and after asking the Lord to guide us during that time, we simply talk. These are quite informal meetings, during which news and events are shared. Recently, for example, Dcn Anthony Kunnumpurath celebrated his diaconate. During the course of the talk, someone will suggest a topic or share a happening which is then discussed and, if the team agrees, is chosen as the theme. 

Once that is decided, we either dissect the theme for the various topics there and then, or it is done at a later date. 

The Process

After the theme has been decided, authors are identified and approached regarding the articles. The necessary follow-up ensures we have all articles ready when work on the issue begins. All of this pertains to theme-based (In Focus) articles. Our regular authors continue their articles as usual. For the rest, authors are identified separately and the same process continues.

In order to have a smooth dispatch of the printed magazines, work on every issue is done keeping various deadlines in mind. For eg, in the case of the July issue, completing editing and handing over the work to the designers by 1st June; ensuring the artwork is ready for print by 10th, and receiving the printed magazines by 15th June. Once the magazines reach our office, our dispatch team takes over and completes the process by the last week of June.

And that is how every issue of Kairos Global reaches you, dear reader, hopefully by the first week of the month
