Kairos Global is not just a magazine for an Indian audience, though this month's issue focuses on India. The underlying principles of our cover story apply universally. Some readers might be surprised by the topic: whether Christians (Catholics) should engage in politics.

Recently, India concluded its general election, and contrary to widespread expectations, the opposition performed well. This occurred amid widespread fears about the previous government's authoritarian tendencies and concerns about the erosion of the country's secular values.

Not all citizens globally have the privilege of expressing their wishes and selecting their leaders through voting. Unfortunately, many so-called good people dismiss the importance of voting and hold politicians in low regard. However, the recent election results in India highlight the deep understanding, maturity, and awareness of ordinary Indian citizens, many of whom are poor. Their participation reflects a robust democratic engagement that belies stereotypes about their political awareness.

We should also recognise and appreciate leaders who, despite facing significant difficulties, steadfastly opposed the existing regime. Their determination and bravery are commendable, and we owe them a huge gratitude for their sacrifices. Their actions teach us an important lesson: we must be willing to leave our comfort zones and face challenges for the greater good.

At Kairos Global, we are proud that some of India's brightest minds collaborated with us to contribute articles for this issue. Their insights are invaluable, not just for India but globally. When governments legalise unjust and immoral practices, or when oppression and unethical behaviour prevail, we must raise our voices and take a stand. It is not just a national issue but a global one, calling for collective action.

Engaging in politics can and should be an instrument for establishing the Kingdom of God. By participating in the political process, Christians can work towards creating a just and moral society. Politics should not be viewed as a dirty game but as a field where principles of justice, morality, and the common good can be upheld and promoted.

The recent Indian election serves as a reminder of the power of democracy and the importance of political engagement. It demonstrates that ordinary citizens, when informed and motivated, can bring about significant change. As Christians, we are called to be active participants in shaping our societies, ensuring that they reflect values of justice, equity, and compassion.

In conclusion, the lessons from India's elections are relevant worldwide. We must be proactive in addressing injustices and working towards a society that aligns with our moral and ethical values. Let us embrace politics as a vital tool in our mission to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth.
