God came to a womb, unseen, unknown

A frail woman’s hollow, he deemed home

Depending on nourishment her body did provide,

God chose anonymity, God chose to hide.

God came to a family, a mother and a father

God a helpless babe, waiting to be fed his supper

God, for thirty years, exercised no power

A loving son, carpenter, identity no other.

God came to his disciples, fishermen and corp

Befriended and dined with and loved them a lot

Not recognised, nor honoured, he came to his own,

He preached and he healed, no rewards in store.

God came to be belittled, to be rejected, disowned

God came to Earth and ascended no throne

God came to his creation and was put to death

God still didn’t turn away and loved till his last breath.

God rose from the dead and still came back

To the planet that had just dealt him a torturous attack

He came to love, reassure and point to his Dad

He came to say there’s a way there’s a plan.

God still comes today beckoning us back

Is God a pride-less, meek, spineless doormat?

No amount of unfaithfulness will make him flinch

He will only come closer to his beloved, inch by inch.

He comes in the Eucharist, he comes in the Word

God just keeps coming, it is almost absurd

He comes when two or three gather in his name,

Our bodies chosen as God’s Spirits’ frame.

God is relentless and his coming won’t stop or wane

We come and we go and we come and go again

Yet wise men sought him once and the wise seek him today

May Father God find in us a child who comes, a child who comes to stay.
