  • We must not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by the pace of a world that does not know what it is chasing. Rather, we must return to serving the rhythm of life, the harmony of creation and healing its wounds.

  • In a world marked by tension, which seems to make conflict the only way of addressing needs and demands, our efforts to commit ourselves to dialogue, listening and reconciliation may appear insufficient, at times even futile.

  • I have often mentioned that the peace of the risen Lord is ‘unarmed’. This is because He always responded to violence and aggression in an unarmed way, inviting us to do likewise.

  • I carry with me a photo of a Muslim child who, during the visit to Lebanon, was waiting there with a sign saying ‘Welcome Pope Leo.’ He has been killed in this final phase of the war. There are many human situations, and I think we must be able to think in these terms.

  • Wisdom enables us to discern and pursue the true and the good, rather than apparent goods and vainglory, amid the circumstances of daily life.

  • Temperance proves essential for the legitimate use of authority, for a true understanding of temperance restrains inordinate self-exaltation and acts as a guardrail against the abuse of power.

  • There is no opposition, nor competition, between heaven and earth; in Jesus they are united forever. This living and dynamic mystery binds the heart to an indissoluble love: it binds and fills it. Certainly, like the love of spouses.

  • The Lord does not come to take anything from us. Rather, He is the Good Shepherd who increases life and offers it to us in abundance. Jesus knows and seeks us like a shepherd seeks His sheep. Jesus is bound to us by a relationship of friendship. He knows us, calls us by name, guides us, and seeks us out when we are lost, caring for us with tenderness.

For the values of sportsLet us pray that sports be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and that they promote values such as respect, solidarity, and personal growth.
