Opening our hearts out to the poor!
I personally believe that God blesses us so that we may be a blessing to others, especially the people that God has placed in our lives. That list, will start with our families and then widen to our friends, communities, colleagues, acquaintances and so on. Recently, thanks to Facebook, I met with an old friend of mine who used to play football with me in my school days. I came to know that he was in a very bad financial situation and that he was struggling to even pay his electricity bill. So, I offered to foot his bill. This gesture moved him so much, that he broke down in tears. When we open our hearts to Christ, our Heavenly Father will pour out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. This love cannot be contained and is bound to overflow to the people around us. All that we need to do is, to be sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, who will enable us to identify those near us, who are in need of our help. Charity begins at home! So, let’s practice helping our family and be ready to be “Jesus” to our neighbour when the opportunity comes knocking.

Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices, God is pleased. (Hebrew 13:16) “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family,” says St. Mother Theresa. At times our vision gets tunnelled when it comes to sharing. We try to find places where we can practice the corporal acts of mercy, neglecting the “Lazarus” in our own house. The deepest desire of one’s heart is to be loved and recognized. I’ve seen many mothers lamenting that their children don’t even look at their face lovingly or call them ‘mom ‘passionately! What has happened to our generation? My mother-in-law was staying with me for a few months and I decided that she would receive the love she deserved. So, every morning before I left for work, I made sure that I kissed her, saying I loved her and blessed her with a cross on her forehead with holy water. This act of love filled her heart and gave her energy for the day. Sharing the love that God has given us thus becomes a double-edged blessing whereby the person who is giving and receiving are blessed!
