JESUS YOUTH - A CATHOLIC MISSIONARY MOVEMENT | KAIROS GLOBAL | OCTOBER 2026

Jesus Youth – A Catholic Missionary Movement
Jesus Youth International is an international Catholic movement that emerged from the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Kerala, India, in the 1970s. Its spirituality is centred on helping ordinary young people encounter Jesus personally, grow in friendship with Him, live their faith in everyday situations and become missionary disciples. Today, Jesus Youth describes itself as ‘A Missionary Movement at the Service of the Church,’ with a particular emphasis on evangelising young people and bringing the Gospel into contemporary environments.
The Six Spiritual Pillars
The spirituality of Jesus Youth is built around six pillars:
Prayer – developing a personal relationship with Jesus through daily prayer and a life of dependence on God.
Word of God – allowing Scripture to shape one's thinking, decisions and lifestyle.
Sacraments – living deeply from the Eucharist, Reconciliation and the sacramental life of the Catholic Church.
Fellowship – growing through friendships, prayer groups, cells, households and small communities.
Evangelisation – sharing Jesus through one's life, relationships, workplace, campus, parish and mission.
Option for the Poor – encountering Christ in the poor and responding concretely to their needs.
These pillars are intended not merely as activities but as a way of life – helping a Catholic live the Gospel in ordinary circumstances.
Ministries and Mission
Jesus Youth works across different stages and situations of life. Its ministry areas include Campus/Universities, Families, Teens, Kids, Parishes, Outreach, Pro-life, Mission, Nurses, Talent & Workplaces/Professionals. It also has formation programmes, mission volunteering, publications such as Kairos Global and Kairos Buds, music ministries, technology initiatives and social-action projects.
The movement also has an important missionary dimension. Jesus Youth volunteers and groups have undertaken missions in places including Africa, the Middle East, North America, Oceania, and Southeast Asia, combining evangelisation with practical service.
Catholic Church Approval
Jesus Youth has a significant ecclesial journey. It received canonical approval from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) in 2008, with renewal in 2011. In May 2016, the Holy See canonically approved it as an international private association of the faithful with juridical personality, then under the Pontifical Council for the Laity.
This ecclesial recognition matters because Jesus Youth sees itself not as a parallel Church but as a movement at the service of the Catholic Church, working in communion with bishops, priests, parishes and the wider Church.
International Presence
From its Indian beginnings, Jesus Youth spread through migration, university life, professional environments and missionary initiatives. The movement now has a presence in over 50 countries, spanning regions including South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, Oceania and Africa.
