What happens when a few young people say ‘yes’ to Jesus? Sometimes, a prayer meeting begins. Sometimes, a friendship becomes a mission. Sometimes, a small movement born in one corner of the world crosses languages, cultures and continents and becomes a family of missionaries carrying the same fire. That is the story of Jesus Youth.

Looking back on this journey, one cannot explain it through plans, programmes or human effort alone. Jesus Youth began in the context of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Kerala and, in 1985, groups of young people came together under the name ‘Jesus Youth’. From there, the spirituality began travelling through campuses, workplaces, parishes and families, eventually reaching different parts of the world. Today, Jesus Youth is an international Catholic movement recognised by the Holy See and present in more than 50 countries.

When I look at how the Lord has spread this movement from a humble beginning to a global mission, I see only His faithfulness.

Perhaps one of the most significant moments in understanding this missionary journey came in 1999, when St John Paul II issued Ecclesia in Asia. Given in New Delhi on 6 November 1999, the Apostolic Exhortation called the Church in Asia to proclaim Jesus Christ as Saviour while recognising the people of Asia as essential to the Church’s future. The Pope emphasised the importance of inculturation, dialogue and the active participation of lay people in the Church's mission.

During this period, something beautiful began to unfold within Jesus Youth: mission could no longer be understood merely as going somewhere; it meant becoming available wherever God sent us. Cultural exchanges, mission outreaches and friendships across borders began opening new doors. Young people carried not merely a programme but a way of life – personal prayer, the Word of God, the sacraments, fellowship, evangelisation and an option for the poor. Migration became mission. Friendship became mission. Profession became mission. Family became mission.

This is the mystery of mission: God takes something small, places it in willing hands, and makes it fruitful.

The journey has not been without challenges. Yet the story of Jesus Youth repeatedly reminds us that missionary movements are not sustained by human enthusiasm alone. They are sustained by grace, prayer, formation, community and the willingness of ordinary people to say, ‘Here I am, Lord. Send me.’

And yet, perhaps the most important story is written in human hearts: a young person encountering Jesus, a family rediscovering faith, a priest discovering a new way of accompanying youth, a missionary crossing a cultural boundary, or a small prayer group becoming the beginning of something much larger.

Jesus told His disciples, ‘You will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth’ (Acts 1:8). At its heart, Jesus Youth’s geographical journey manifests this Gospel mandate.

As we celebrate this journey from the local to the global, the question before us is not simply, ‘Where has Jesus Youth reached?’ It is also, ‘Where is Jesus sending us next?’ The world continues to change. New generations are searching. New cultures are opening. New mission fields are emerging in places we may never have imagined.

So let us not merely celebrate the journey. Let us continue it. May the next chapter of the Jesus Youth journey to the global Church be written through our ‘yes’.
