A Chance Encounter that Started it All

I had gone to meet ATC publishers in Bengaluru to find a market for my faith-based creatives when they mentioned an event in Christ College. Dr Chackochan helped with the stall booking for ATC, and that is how I landed in the middle of the Jesus Youth Jaago conference in October 2023. My experience of Jaago was very different from the participants'. It involved three days of gruelling standing and engaging with youth and families who wandered to our stall, from a sea of 18,000 people from all over India and some from abroad.

That’s where I met the humble and ever enthusiastic Dr Chackochan. On 24th October, Kairos Media invited me to join them, working to further the kingdom of God.  And so I found myself in the Kairos Global editorial team. With only the experience of writing a couple of children’s books, I still do not know what prompted Dr Chackochan to consider me, but I’m glad he did.

During our meetings, there were awkward moments when everyone switched to their familiar Malayalam, and I, with a false bravado, pretended I understood. Many times, I found myself responding to a different topic than what was actually being discussed. Once, when the topic of discussion was new evangelisation, I delved into a description of the charismatic renewal in Mumbai! Our discussions, I realised, were not so much about individual experiences, but rather finding what resonated with our subscribers and addressing them.

When I found everyone trying to accommodate my unfamiliarity with the language, and thought I was impeding free-flowing speech and chain of thought, I requested Dr Chackochan to let me go. He responded that everyone had agreed to speak in English…and they have kept their word! I am really humbled by the way the entire team changed their naturally flowing Malayalam just to accommodate me. So I'm going to make an effort to learn Malayalam as well.

I have grown to be very fond of ‘my’ editorial team and ‘my’ magazine, as I call it.  Being able to contribute to spreading God’s word through Jesus Youth has been for me an enriching experience.

Recently, I was asked whether I could get an interview with Jemimah Rodrigues, the World Cup-winning Indian cricketer, and I bravely said yes, although there are 22 million people in Mumbai, and so being a Mumbaikar is not that big an edge as it seems. Try as I might, I couldn’t get a breakthrough. But again, things just fell in place when someone from the Kairos team got the contact for me, and we got the interview. The rest is history. 

When I look back, I feel only God could gift me the most fulfilling hour every month.

 I love the way the entire editorial team gives everyone space and respects every opinion. I think God’s grace is alive and active in this little group, which sets the direction for the magazine.

God led me to some of the humblest and most friendly people I’ve known. I was amazed and still am at how the entire magazine is planned in that one hour of spirit-filled collaboration.

Jyothsna DSouza is a Chartered Accountant by profession, homemaker by choice, and an evangeliser by passion. Her husband and three kids are the joy of her life. When her children’s dependence on her as a mother decreased, she began to channelise her time and energy on social issues and spreading positivity through faith. The Lord has led her to use digital means to evangelise through print creatives like affirmation cards, a biblical dumb charades game, and personalised books for children. It was while marketing these that she encountered Jesus Youth, and then the Kairos Global team, which has become an extended family to her.
