A Priest’s Observations
Having been with the editorial team of Kairos Global for three years now, I’ve had numerous experiences and would like to share a few in particular.
The first thing is that each person on the editorial team is deeply rooted in faith and well aware of what today’s youth undergo. Both of these are central to Kairos Global – a Catholic magazine for youth and young families. Every discussion keeps our Catholic faith at the centre, and no matter the theme, faith and youth perspective are brought into it.
The second quality that I have noted is the team’s commitment. There are members of the editorial team from different parts of the world, and I’ve been astonished to see them set aside busy schedules to attend our editorial meetings. Even on the days when I couldn't make it, they would always be there. Their commitment to the magazine and the movement is remarkable. I recall some of them pulling their vehicles aside to join a meeting; others would use headsets and attend while travelling; some would even set aside their work and join the meeting.
The communication in the team is noteworthy. In an hour, we can discuss and identify what theme an issue should take up. There is an undeniable guidance of the Holy Spirit. I remember how the meeting would go silent at times, and how there would be a sudden and spontaneous overflow of ideas completely different from those previously discussed. Every single meeting has, in one way or the other, been fruitful. I have always felt this to be the grace of the Holy Spirit.
The coordination and teamwork after every meeting is commendable. The editorial team’s work is over in an hour. After that, the idea becomes a reality by so many people, many of whom I do not know. The many writers, the designers, the printer, the marketing and circulation team – it is the teamwork of all these people who bring an idea into being. What amazes me is their desire to evangelise, far from reaping monetary benefits.
Another aspect is how feedback within the editorial team is respected. We have the freedom to share our views and opinions, and are given a space to speak our mind, regardless of the outcome. Whenever a suggestion is put forward concerning the magazine, it is taken into consideration.
The fellowship and family atmosphere I experience here is something I cherish. There is a special sweetness in coming together, praying for each other, and sharing pieces of our life. All this was possible because of the freedom within the team. Another thing that has left me wonderstruck is how God places the perfect people at the perfect time. This convinced me that God chose them for His ministry and that He was leading this media evangelisation initiative.
As the only priest on the team, I often share from the Church's standpoint while everyone else expresses their views from a layman's perspective. I have often felt this as a blessing that I could help them being a priest. Whenever a topic is youth-centred, I’ve been able to share my views too. Since I have been completing a course at college, I was able to understand the pulse of today's youth. Similarly, through exposure to families in parishes, I am aware of the problems they suffer. I feel that all of this has helped me to move with the team better.
Each time the magazine reaches me, I quickly scan through it. I also read other magazines and compare ours with them.
The best part has always been the blessing I get to impart after every meeting. The team has always been part of my prayers and is also specially remembered during the Holy Masses I offer.
