Q. Why does the Catholic Church discourage marrying outside the faith?

The Catholic Church emphasises the importance of marrying within the faith primarily due to theological, pastoral, and sacramental reasons.

First, let us look at the theological and sacramental understanding of marriage: Nature of the Sacrament: The Catholic Church views marriage as a sacred covenant that reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church (CCC 1601). The sacramental nature of marriage is deeply rooted in the faith, and marrying a non-Catholic can complicate the understanding and practice of this sacrament. Unity of Faith: The Church teaches that unity in faith is essential for a strong marriage. Differences in religious beliefs can lead to misunderstanding and conflicts regarding fundamental values, moral teachings, and the upbringing of children. The Church encourages couples to share a common faith to foster harmony and mutual support in their spiritual lives (CCC 1633). 

Secondly, we shall review the Pastoral Considerations. Raising Children in the Faith: One of the primary responsibilities of married couples is to raise their children in the faith. The Church encourages parents to ensure that their children are baptised and educated in Catholic tradition (CCC 2225). Marrying outside the faith may pose challenges in fulfilling this obligation, as differing beliefs can lead to confusion about religious practices and values. Support in Spiritual Life: A shared faith provides a foundation for mutual support in spiritual growth and moral decision-making. Couples who share the same beliefs can better encourage one another in their faith journeys and engage in practices such as prayer, worship, and participation in the sacraments together (CCC 1634). 

Finally, let us consider the Canon Law and Guidelines: Canon Law on Mixed Marriages: The Church permits mixed marriages (between a Catholic and a baptised non-Catholic) under certain conditions, but it requires that the Catholic party must promise to do all in their power to have their children baptised and raised in the Catholic faith (Canon 1124). This reflects the Church’s concern for the spiritual well-being of the family. Pastoral Preparation: Couples considering marriage, especially in mixed faith situations, are encouraged to engage in premarital counselling and preparation programmes offered by the Church. These programmes help couples navigate potential challenges and deepen their understanding of the sacrament of marriage (CCC 1632). 

In conclusion, the Catholic Church encourages marrying within the faith due to the sacramental nature of marriage, the importance of unity in belief, and the pastoral responsibilities of raising children in the Catholic tradition.  While the Church does recognise the reality of mixed marriages, it emphasises the need for careful consideration and preparation to ensure that the couple can support one another in their faith and fulfill their obligations to their children. The teachings on this matter reflect a deep concern for the spiritual well-being of individuals and families within the context of the Catholic faith.

Can a person form his conscience?

Yes, in fact he must do that. The conscience, which is innate to every person endowed with reason, can be misled and deadened. That is why it must be formed into an increasingly fine-tuned instrument for acting rightly. [CCC 1783-1788, 1799-1800]

The first school of conscience is self-criticism. We tend to judge things to our own advantage. The second school of conscience is orientation to the good actions of others. The correct formation of conscience leads a man into the freedom to do what has been correctly identified as good. With the help of the Holy Spirit and Scripture, the Church over her long history has accumulated vast knowledge about right action; it is part of her mission to instruct and guide people.
