Intro: To hear the name ‘Palliachen’ is to unleash a dam of love, created in the hearts of countless men and women by a simple priest. Kairos Global remembers Fr Abraham Pallivathukal, SJ.

There are some rare souls whose lives are so profound that they do not merely leave memories behind; they carve an indelible blueprint onto the hearts of everyone they encounter. Fr Abraham Pallivathukal, SJ, affectionately known to generations simply as Palliachen, was such a soul. He was an ordinary man who performed simple tasks with extraordinary perfection, offering his life as a living canvas to demonstrate that God always walks with us and that our absolute trust must always be placed in Him.

Carrying the Scent of His Sheep

To understand Palliachen is to understand a leadership that was completely devoid of pretension. Long before priests were urged to acquire the ‘scent of their sheep,’ Palliachen was already living that reality on the streets, buses, and institutional corridors of Kerala.

Born on 11 December 1939, into a devout family in Pulincunnu, Alappuzha, he grew up surrounded by a prayerful atmosphere that sowed the seeds of his lifelong commitment. He joined the Jesuit minor seminary in Dindigul in 1957, and was ordained a priest in 1971, stepping directly into the ordinary realities of human struggle.

Whether serving as an assistant parish priest, editing the children's magazine Sneha Sena at Shanthi Nilayam in Kottayam, or acting as the rector of Christ Hall in Kozhikode, Palliachen’s focus was never on titles, positions, or institutional walls. His focus was always on the individual standing right before him. In a world increasingly driven by commercialisation, media visibility, and superficial networking, Palliachen stood out as a counter-cultural sign. He chose to look at people through the eyes of Christ, prioritising personal character formation over large-scale, flashy programming.

Pioneer of Renewal

Palliachen’s name is deeply intertwined with the history of spiritual awakening in Kerala. Before the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) received its official ecclesiastical recognition, Palliachen was its undisputed face and voice as the Chairman of the Kerala Service Team (KST). He spearheaded monumental milestones, including the landmark 1982 National Charismatic Convention at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. Later, he took the lead in establishing Emmaus in Kalamassery, creating a permanent spiritual home for the Kerala Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (KCCRS).

Yet, his visionary zeal did not stop with structural committees. In 1985, his guidance proved decisive during the historic Jesus Youth ’85 conference. That spark quickly grew into the Jesus Youth movement, which has now spread its wings across more than thirty countries globally.

Palliachen knew that true, lasting spiritual renewal does not happen in transient emotional crowds; it happens through deep, consistent, personal accompaniment. He chose to invest his time in the slow, painstaking work of building up the laity, equipping ordinary young men and women to become courageous ambassadors of Christ in their respective secular environments.

The Ministry of Practical Presence and Radical Simplicity

One of the most defining aspects of Palliachen’s character was what many affectionately call his ‘ministry of presence.’ He was fundamentally a man of practical solutions. When people came to him broken, burdened, or confused, he never hid behind empty pleasantries, or pious platitudes. He understood that spiritual counselling cannot be divorced from human reality.

If a family came to him lacking a roof over their heads, suffering from a severe medical crisis, or drowning in financial distress, Palliachen did not simply tell them, ‘I will pray for you,’ and send them away. He actively combined deep, intercessory prayer with sharp reasoning and material resources. He would activate his vast network, connect people, tap into resources, and find real, tangible solutions to ease their temporal heavy struggles. To Palliachen, love was a verb that required hands, feet, and practical action.

This practical approach to life perfectly matched his radical simplicity. Palliachen stubbornly refused to let his status or age dictate a life of comfort. Even as an octogenarian of immense spiritual authority, he completely rejected ostentation. He relied strictly on public transport, frequently arriving via crowded public buses and auto-rickshaws, carrying nothing but a simple bag and a heart full of grace.

Those who had the privilege of hosting him share remarkably consistent memories. He was a genuinely generous host who shared all he had without a second thought. Yet, whenever he visited others or ate with a community, he adamantly refused to be treated like an elite guest. Countless witnesses recount the same beautiful scene: the moment a meal concluded, Palliachen would firmly decline to let others clean up after him. Instead, he would step right up to the sink, rolling up his sleeves to wash the dishes himself. Through these small, silent, everyday acts of domestic service, he quietly taught everyone around him the true meaning of Gospel leadership.

Memories of the ‘Affectionate Pinches’ and the Presence of Christ

To remember Palliachen is also to remember a guide who loved with a firm, disciplined, and intensely relational heart. He practised the biblical mandate to speak the truth in love. He never hesitated to voice his convictions or address human faults directly. His candour remained completely uncompromised, balanced always by a deep pastoral warmth.

Generations of Jesus Youth and Charismatic renewal volunteers grew up under his watchful eye, guided by his sharp corrections, blunt admonitions, and his legendary ‘affectionate pinches.’ Those physical pinches became a trademark of his teaching methodology – a playful yet firm way of waking people up to spiritual reality.

A signature teaching that Palliachen left behind revolved around recognising the constant companionship of Jesus Christ. Many have recounted how he would casually corner a young person or a visitor and ask simple questions like: ‘Who travelled with you today?’ or ‘How many members are in your family?’

If they answered, ‘I travelled alone,’ or enumerated only their human relatives, Palliachen would promptly give them one of his famous, playful pinches until they smiled and acknowledged the missing truth: that Jesus was right there, travelling beside them, living within their home. He spent his entire life breaking down the wall between the sacred and the secular, drilling into our minds the beautiful, comforting reality that Christ is our constant companion.

An Enduring Legacy

Even ecclesial leaders sought out this plain-spoken Jesuit for their own spiritual survival. Rt Rev Dr James Anaparambil, Bishop of Alleppey Diocese, beautifully captured Palliachen's essence when reflecting on his role as a spiritual guide: ‘From 2014, Fr Abraham Pallivathukal has been my spiritual director. Before making major decisions, I would meet him. The core spiritual guidance he provides to everyone, including priests, is the question: “If Christ were in your place, what would you do?” He was a priest in the full sense, one who has set apart his life completely for that call.’

When Palliachen passed from this life, he left behind no material wealth, no grand personal monuments, and no self-glorifying books. What he left behind was a living network of transformed lives, a permanent spirit of home at Emmaus, and a global youth movement burning with love for the Church.

We thank God for the gift of Pallivathukal Achen. We thank him for his prayers, his blunt truths, his dishwashing lessons, his radical hospitality, and his affectionate pinches. He showed us that when we empty ourselves, God steps in to fill the void, and Providence never fails.

Though he has completed his earthly race and returned to the Father, the fragrance of his beautiful life remains deep within our hearts, continuing to guide our steps until we meet again in eternity. May his soul rest in everlasting glory.
