Intro: Nobin Jose, the Chief Editor of Kairos Buds, shares how the Kairos magazines have been an invaluable tool for the movement in drawing hearts for Christ.

It all began with a simple gift – a copy of Kairos Malayalam handed to me by a friend during my high school days in Kerala. That quiet gesture opened my eyes to a vibrant call to holiness anchored in the six pillars of the Jesus Youth movement. Years later, as a student in Singapore, Kairos remained my spiritual handbook, comforting me in a fast-paced foreign city, and our campus prayer group eagerly ran subscription drives to pass that light to others.

What made Kairos so special was the sacred foundation it was built upon. Born in Kozhikode, India, in the late 1990s, it started as a daring leap of faith by young people with zero publishing experience. Refusing to let their mission be relegated to a minor corner in existing publications, elders fought for a standalone voice tailored for youth. Anchored in dedicated intercession rooms, Friday night vigils, and astounding divine providence – like a desperate Rosary to clear press debts answered by a timely gift from UAE Jesus Youth – Kairos was forged in prayer and built by volunteers who turned exhausting magazine-packing nights into joyful celebrations of community.

That same vision reached me through a phone call from Kairos Media Managing Editor Joshy Joseph in Houston. He shared his dream for Kairos Global and offered me the privilege of writing the cover story for its pilot edition – an interview with Fionne Grace Lai, who encountered Christ through Jesus Youth after growing up in a Buddhist family. From that moment on, I became a devout reader, relying on the magazine for practical wisdom and daily spiritual encouragement.

A few years passed, and I received another call from Joshy. This time, he approached me with a whole new responsibility: serving as the Chief Editor for Kairos Buds. I took several months to pray and discern before accepting the challenge, wanting to ensure I was truly answering God’s call. Stepping into that role revealed the ministry’s immense impact. During a visit to the Jesus Youth missions in Cambodia, I presented copies of Buds and Global to Fr Pedro Ramirez of the SME Quebec Missionaries, who flipped through them and immediately asked, ‘Why not use this for children’s catechism?’

Time and again, Kairos has proven to be a gentle bridge for proclamation. I remember sharing Kairos Global with a young man preparing for adult baptism as a warm invitation into our movement. In Kyoto, Japan, where sharing faith within a homogeneous culture presents unique challenges, Don Augustine used the magazine to show Church authorities and newcomers that Jesus Youth was a living, practical reality. Even an Archbishop in Asia marvelled at our print and editorial quality, astonished by the monthly excellence produced by young hands.

From late-night manual wrapping in Kerala to digital and print reaches across India, the UK, and the USA, Kairos Media remains a radiant torchbearer of the Gospel. May it continue to bridge distances, nurture young souls, and draw countless hearts home to Christ.

Nobin Jose lives in Singapore with his wife, Jilu, and their three children. He is the Chief Editor of Kairos Buds and JY Southeast Asia Mission Coordinator.
